Mylie-isms for August
Monday, August 1 Mommy woke up this morning to realize that Mylie had
slept for a whole 7 hours! This is a new record, and Mommy is excited to see
if it will continue, or if it was just a fluke.
Tuesday, August 2 Daddy and Mylie got to spend some quality time together
tonight. They went out to Home Depot to get new screens for our windows (that
the cats destroyed), and to do some other errands. Daddy was excited to show
Mylie all about home improvement and introduce her to tools. Mommy got to have
some alone time at home, and actually got a chance to shave her legs!
Wednesday, August 3 Mylie is 8 weeks old today! We went to our last
session of our Mommy & Me Class, and afterward went out with everyone to Red
Robin. It is the 4th week that we've done that, and we had 7 moms and their
babies. It is so fun to see them all lined up in a row in their carriers
sleeping while we eat lunch. Up to this point, none of us had ever had to
breastfeed any of the babies while we were at Red Robin, but today one of the
women had to break down and do it. Well, all of the babies must have seen her
and thought it was a good idea, becauseby the time we left, almost every single
one of us had had to feed our little darling.
Thursday, August 4 Our little precocious child is getting very good at
sucking her thumb. She can find it almost any time she wants it now, and is
finding less and less need for her pacifier. Unfortunately, she also likes to
play with her hands, and hasn't figured out yet that she can't do both at the
same time. Mommy will hear her sucking her thumb (she's got a very loud smack...)
and then all of the sudden she'll let out a very upset scream. She's decided
to play with her hands, but then gets very upset that she can't continue to
suck at the same time! So, needless to say,we haven't lost all need for the
pacifier yet.
Mylie is great at tracking just about anything, but especially likes her Cat in
the Hat toy that Grammie found for her at a garage sale. Her attention span is
incredible, and usually Mommy gets bored of playing with it before Mylie does.
She has also figured out how to bat the toys on her Baby Einstein Play Mat, and
can make the motion sensor music come on and then she'll cackle at it or talk
to it. She has started to blow "raspberries" or the little bubbles that babies
blow, and between that and the thumb sucking, she is always rather slobbery...
Friday, August 5 Tonight we went to a Ward Potluck at the church building,
where Mylie was promptly whisked away by Debbie Olson, where she remained happily
for most of the evening, until Mommy won the first round of Bingo, and Mylie
thought she'd better come back so she didn't miss out on the prize (a box of
Andes Mints).
Mylie has also started practicing her singing voice. She has developed a new kind
of scream which sounds a lot like a soprano warming up. She uses it when she's
on the verge of getting upset, but Mommy and Daddy can't take her very seriously,
because we're too busy laughing!
Sunday, August 7 Papa Winters came over for dinner tonight and to see
Mylie. We all had a good time playing with Mylie, who is starting to work on
giggling. Later, Mylie had her first appearance on MTV (Mylie Television)
when we hooked the video camera up to Daddy's computer, and broadcast Mylie
over the Net via Instant Messenger to Grammy's house where Uncle Cody, Grandpa
Bryan, Kathi, Alyssa and Grammy all got to watch her. She showed everybody
her pretty smiles and how good she is at sucking her thumb.
Monday, August 8 For dinner tonight, Mommy and Daddy barbequed a pizza
on the grill. It was a new experience, and it actually worked really well!
For Family Home Evening tonight, we took a present over to Tiffani and David
Larson's home for their new baby Aiden. Aiden was born only six weeks after
Mylie, but it was amazing to see the difference between them, and how big
Mylie is already. Of course, Aiden was only about 7lb 10oz when we saw him,
which was smaller than Mylie has ever been!
Mylie is still working really hard at exercising her vocal cords. She has also
started scooting across the floor when she is laying on her back by pushing
with her exceptionally strong legs. She doesn't really have any interest in
rolling over yet, but if you hold her upright on your lap, she will kick off
with her legs and actually stand up for a few seconds. She loves that game and
will do it over and over until you get tired. Mommy is sure she will be walking
in a couple months; her legs are incredibly strong. She is also such a great
sleeper. Last night she slept for 10 hours without waking up! Her average is
about 7 or 8 hours, and then she'll eat and go back to sleep for another 3 or 4.
Tuesday, August 9 Penny, Desi, Taio & Taio's boyfriend Aaron drove up from
Portland today to visit Mylie (and to go to Ikea). Taio could hardly stand to put Mylie down, and loved to kiss
her - Mylie has very kissable cheeks. Taio also shared with Mylie the joys of
thumb sucking. Mylie was a great baby as we all headed of to Ikea, and then went
out to dinner. After dinner, Mylie went with Mommy & Daddy to an event called
Designed Dinners, where
Daddy wore her in the Snuggli carrier while she slept the whole time. We are so
grateful that Mylie is so easy to take pretty much anywhere.
Wednesday, August 10 Penny, Taio & Aaron came over again today to say
goodbye before they headed back to Portland. Then Mylie and Mommy went out to
lunch with Cheri and Nora. Cheri brought 3 Dr. Seuss books and The Giving Tree
by Shel Silverstein for Mylie, and Nora brought her a new Baby Bach CD.
Thursday, August 11 We went to Seattle today so Mommy could visit her
school advisor, but we ran out of gas on the way there! Mommy was trying so
hard to get there in time, she pushed the gas tank a little too far. She tried
to stop for gas when she realized her wallet wasn't in the diaper bag where it
usually is, and then thought she had enough gas to make it. It was a good
learning experience for Mommy, who always checks the diaper bag EVERY time now.
We were quite late for Mommy's appointment, but Mylie still got to meet Jeremy,
and afterward went to Mommy's old office (The Center for Student Involvement) to meet Michelle and Michael.
After her long stressful day, Mommy treated herself to a nice haircut, and it's
a lot shorter now! Mylie still recognizes Mommy though, and gives her great big
smiles and giggles!
Friday, August 12 Today we went with Shannon and Anna to a
Gymboree Class. We were late getting there because the address we had
was for their previous location, but we finally found them, and we had lots
of fun playing with beach balls and puppets and parachutes. Mylie seems to
be able to see much further than she is supposed to for her age, as she can
track objects that Mommy holds up really high. Afterwards the four of us
all went out to lunch, and both Mylie and Anna slept for most of the time
because they were so exhausted from all the excitement. Later in the evening,
Stacey and Madilyn came over for dinner. Madilyn was very excited to see the
"baby" and kept saying it over and over.
Saturday, August 13 Mylie got to hang out with Daddy today while Mommy
went to a baby shower for Melanie Rust. Later in the afternoon, we all went
over and helped a new family who was moving into our ward. Mylie slept long
enough to let Mommy help a little bit. We came home and Mommy and Daddy moved
our old couches out and moved in new couches that Penny had given us. By the
time they were finished, we were all so tired, we just slugged out for the rest
of the night.
Sunday, August 14 Mylie is beginning to be so fun to play with. Tonight
she not only laughed and cooed at her play mat, but she was able to find and even
grab on to the toys that hang down on it. Earlier this week Mommy and Daddy were
laughing at a television show, and Mylie, who was looking right at Mommy made a
big frowny face like she was going to cry, and then puckered her lips, and finally
made a strange cackle sound. We finally realized that she was trying to mimick us.
It was hilarious. Then she just kept laughing while she tried to put both fists in
her mouth. Basically any time you hold her up in front of you and smile at her,
she will smile back and laugh with you (except if she's tired or hungry). She also
loves being sung to, and seems to make a different face when Daddy sings to her in
Cambodian, almost like she can tell the difference. And last night she went to bed
at 10:30, and was still asleep at 8:00 when Mommy had to wake her up to get ready for
church. Mommy and Daddy are so thrilled (Mommy especially) and are starting to think
that they don't want any more kids, because they don't want to push their luck after
having such a great and easy-going baby!
Monday, August 15 We went for our 2-Month Check-Up today. Dr. Morse says
Mylie is absolutely perfect (which we already knew, of course). She is up to 13
lbs 4oz (the 97th percentile) and is 23 3/4 inches (the 92nd percentile) and her
head is 15 2/3 inches (the 75th percentile). The saddest part was that Mylie had
to get her first vaccinations - 4 of them! She was being a very happy baby and
was smiling and giggling at the nurse who was coming at her with four needles!
And then she stuck Mylie in each thigh twice. After the first one Mylie started
to cry and then looked at the nurse with a look that said, "What did I ever do
to you!?" It broke Mommy's heart, but Mylie calmed down fairly quickly after
Mommy picked her up and she was able to find her thumb to suck. Mylie slept a
lot the rest of the day, and was pretty cranky and screamed in pain a lot. She
seemed to be better after getting some grape-flavored Tylenol. By the evening
she seemed to be back to normal, although still pretty sleepy, but she was smiling
and playing with Daddy. Today was also Mylie's first run in with a rectal
thermometer...poor kid.
Tuesday, August 16 Mylie woke up for her 5:30 feeding this morning, which was
not abnormal, but about 10 minutes into it, she puked up all over Mommy and the
rocking chair. Mommy was a little concerned because of the shots she had yesterday,
but her temperature was normal, and she was not acting abnormal either before or
afterward, so we all decided just to go back to bed. She seemed to be okay the rest
of the day. Later, Stacey and Madilyn came over with Stacey's mom, Julene. We
all went out to lunch and then back to Ikea! We love to go there with out of town
guests, and it's good exercise when we meander around the whole store.
Friday, August 19 Today we went to Gymboree again and got to play with
paintbrushes (not to worry, no paint!). Mylie hasn't been sleeping well since
Monday when her schedule got all screwed up by the shots, and last night she woke
up at 1:15, and then again at 7:30, and wouldn't go back to sleep. So by the time
we got to Gymboree, she was really tired, and ended up crashing for the last 15
minutes of it. Grammie came to visit for the weekend, and got here after Mylie fell
asleep, but she woke up for long enough to greet Grammie properly.
Saturday, August 20 Today was Daddy's birthday! He is in his "late twenties"
now. We started the day by going to JC Penney's to pick up Mylie's portraits. They
are gorgeous! Later, Mommy and Daddy went to the Perkins to welcome back Steve and
Ali from their 1000 mile father-daughter tandem bike ride. Grammie got to watch
Mylie for awhile while they were gone, which she was excited about. Later in the
evening, Daddy's family all came over to celebrate his birthday and to see Mylie.
Sunday, August 21 Mylie is really starting to enjoy playing with toys. Grammie
brought a bunch up with her, and Mylie is getting enough coordination to be able to
stick them directly in her mouth! She scoots across the floor on her back by pushing off
with her feet, and sometimes she will turn her hands up by her ears like she is going
to do a back bend, and it looks like she is trying to crawl upside down. If she is holding
on to someone's fingers, she can pull herself up to a standing position from a sitting
position. She loves to stand, even though she is still very wobbly. Mommy and Daddy can
only imagine how much energy it must take for her to do that.
Tuesday, August 23 Last night Mylie slept from 8:00pm to 5:30am, then went back
to sleep and was sleeping at 8:00am when Mommy had to wake her up to get ready. Mommy
had a doctor's appointment in the morning, and after we were done, we went to UPS,
Mommy's alma mater, and got to meet all the people there. We met Marta, Sarah Hays,
Debbie Chee, Jacki Pearce-Droge and Darrel Frost, who was visiting from New York.
We went out to lunch with Marta, Darrel and Nora, and then went to watch the
Orientation Leaders rehearse for their skit.
Saturday, August 27 We took our little young Republican to the King County
GOP Picnic today. We got to hear a lot of candiates speak, see a lot of neat
T-Shirts, and even got to watch the Cambodian Dance Preservation Troupe perform,
which absolutely thrilled Daddy.
