The Cat in the Hat - Halloween 2005

Mylie-isms for October

Saturday, October 1 Daddy spent most of the morning today replacing the battery in the car before heading off to work to put in some extra hours. When he got back he had to head off to the Priesthood Session of General Conference, so Mylie and Mommy got to hang out together all day. Mylie made some great developmental strides this week. She has mastered the roll from back to front, and is quite good at it. She figured out how to get that second hand out from underneath her, so she can grab at whatever she wants, which promptly goes into her mouth. She gets frustrated after awhile because she is not able to roll back over yet, and gets tired of being on her stomach. This morning Mommy & Daddy woke up to a "scritch-scratch, scritch-scratch" coming over the monitor. Mylie had woken up, rolled over, and was happily using her fingernails to scratch her crib sheets. When mommy went in to get her, she was sitting there smiling with a look like, "Well, I thought that would get you in here.".

She is really working hard on forming words...you can see her move her tongue all around and she babbles back to you when you talk to her. She also has found her feet...well, actually, her foot. She can grab and play with her left foot, but although she holds her right foot up, she is still not sure how to grab it. She works hard at pulling all the socks off her feet, which is not too much of a challenge, since they tend to come off on their own.

Sunday, October 2 In addition to her developmental milestones, Mylie has been a little bit fussier lately. She often grabs at her ears, which worried Mommy that she might have an ear infection. But she never has a temperature, and Mommy read that grabbing at her ears could be a sign of teething. She loves to chew on things - especially Mommy's fingers, so this makes sense. And when Mommy gave her some teething tablets, it seemed to help.

Tonight, Nick & Melanie Rust came over with their new baby, Ammon. Mylie was so much fun to watch because she is suddenly very interested in other babies for the first time. She kept looking at and trying to reach for Ammon. When Ammon suddenly started crying, it scared her a bit, and she started crying too. Mylie is a very sympathetic crier.

Friday, October 7 What a busy day! We left early this morning to deliver paychecks to all the people at the stores. We got back just in time to meet Shannon and Anna and drive up to Gymboree. There were a ton of babies there today! We sat next to Austin, and Mylie kept rolling over and trying to get to Austin. She would look and smile at him, and then she would reach for his face. It wasn't long until she reduced Austin to tears. Apparently, he doesn't like the more forward girls.

After Gymboree, we went to lunch with Shannon & Anna. The babies were sleeping nicely at the restaurant, when a waitress came over to tell us that they would testing the fire alarm in a few minutes. What is it with us being places where they test the fire alarm?! Luckily, it was just a short buzz, and the babies hardly budged. After lunch, Shannon and Anna came over to our house to test out our Exersaucer. Shannon wanted to see how Anna handled it before she bought one. Mylie was funny and acted like she didn't want to share her toy. Of course, she is not at that selfish stage yet...at least we hope! On the way to our house, Anna started crying because she was hungry, so soon Mylie started crying too. It was a different cry than Mommy had ever heard - she wasn't hungry or tired. She was just crying because she was sad for Anna! It got to be pretty funny because they would both scream loud and then get quiet at the same time. They were totally in synch, and Shannon & Mommy couldn't help but laugh!

We were only at our house long enough to let Anna play for a little bit and refill the diaper bag, and then we headed out to pick Daddy up from work. Then we all drove over to Seattle to meet Cheri and Darren at the Home Show. Mylie was pretty good at the Home Show until she got tired and hungry. Dad fed her a bottle while we walked, and she dozed off for a little bit. We finished the Show at about 7:30, and decided to go to dinner. We were pushing Mylie's bedtime, but thought she would just fall asleep in the restaurant. Boy were we wrong! Mylie is becoming a little bit too social to just fall asleep when there is so much to see and do. So she stayed up to talk and see what was going on, until all of the sudden she got very tired and very hungry, and fell to pieces. Mommy tried to nurse her at the table, but she was much too upset to eat under a blanket, so we ended up having to find someplace else. We finally found a private dining room that was not being used and had dim lighting. After a few minutes of screaming, Mylie finally calmed down long enough to eat. It was probably the worst fit she has thrown to date.

Saturday, October 8 To celebrate Mylie's 4-Month Birthday, we painted our downstairs! Cheri, Darren, Jason & Nora all came over in the morning and helped us paint. We painted all day long, and got almost all of it done, and it looks great!

Tuesday, October 11 Today was Mylie's 4-Month check-up. We sat in the waiting room for close to 45 minutes, so by the time the doctor came in, Mylie was tired and pretty hungry. She got a little upset during the exam, and when they gave her the shots, she screamed worse than Mommy had ever heard. She was difficult to calm down, but finally did once Mommy got her to nurse a little. We came home and she slept for about three hours, and then seemed much better. Mommy noticed for the first time that Mylie was looking to her for reassurance during the exam. She started looking worried when the doctor was poking and prodding at her, and then looked over to Mommy to make sure things were okay. In the evening, Mylie got to have Daddy time while Mommy went to a PartyLite Candle party, and got a much needed break!

Friday, October 14 Grammie Marci flew into town today on her way home from a business trip to Florida. She got in just in time for Mommy & Mylie to pick her up and take her to Gymboree with us. Grammie thought it was so funny to watch Mylie. While all the other babies were having sweet bonding time with their parents, Mylie couldn't care less about staring into Mommy's eyes. She was way too busy trying to play with all the other babies!

We got home from Gymboree just in time to be there when our new heaters were delivered! Mylie got to take a little nap and then we went with Grammie down to JC Penney to have Mylie's 4-month old pictures taken. We got lots of great shots, although Mylie was very concerned about the Halloween garland we brought as a prop. She felt some in her hand, and kept trying to stare at it instead of looking at the camera.

Later in the evening, Mylie got her first taste of solid food! Daddy got to feed her Rice Cereal while Mommy and Grammie watched and filmed. She took to it immediately, and was quickly trying to grab the spoon to feed herself!

Wednesday, October 19 Today we went to the Preschool Story Hour at the Renton Library. Of course, Mylie was a little young to pay attention to the stories, but it was fun to see what we have to look forward to! The theme was spiders, for Halloween, and there were spiderwebs everywhere to look at. Some of our friends from church were there and Mylie had a great time playing with Baby Rebekah, who was born the same day. Afterward, Mommy learned a valuable lesson about how easy it is for a toddler to disappear when Rebekah's older sister, Jeanette went around the other side of a counter. In the time it took for her mom to get around to that side, she had completely disappeared. All of us started looking for her, and it took a few minutes before we caught her on the other side of the library!

Friday, October 21 After Daddy got home from work today, we packed up and headed down to Portland for the weekend. We left at about 7:30pm. We have decided that travelling at night is good for Mylie, because then she sleeps most of the way and we make really good time. We got there at 10:30, and waited for about an hour when Cheri, Justin, Kinsy & David showed up. We were all staying at Jim & Kathryn's, although they were out of town for the weekend. We were all tired and went straight to bed. Mylie got to sleep with Mommy & Daddy, which is pretty much the first time she's done that for a whole night. She did much better than either of us expected, and neither of us rolled on her either! She woke up pretty early, but Daddy got up with her and let Mommy sleep in a little bit.

Saturday, October 22 After Mylie's morning nap, we all packed up to head into the city for the day. We went out to breakfast, then to the Shane Co to pick up Kinsy's ring, and then went to a park & ride to take the Max into downtown. We walked around the Pioneer Square Mall for a couple hours, and then went to dinner at the Melting Pot, where Mommy's friend Katie and her boyfriend Zach met us. By this time, Mylie had had almost no other naps, and had been carted all across town. Because we had not driven in, we did not have her carseat/carrier to have her sit in, and had to try to hold her while we were eating our fondue. The booths we were in were quite crowded as well. So, Mylie got pretty fussy. Mommy took a couple turns feeding her, but there was no where to really go, so we headed to the family restroom, and Mommy had to do it standing up! Although her back got pretty sore, she was proud of herself for being such an expert now. Mylie seemed to be pretty okay as long as she was moving around, so we all kept having to take turns walking with her. Even Katie & Zach took a turn.

Once we finished dinner, we took the Max to the Rose Garden to go to the Blazer game. Dinner had taken a long time, so we didn't even get to the game until part way through the third quarter. We didn't care, though, because the tickets were free. And if Mylie thought she couldn't sleep before, she really couldn't sleep at a professional basketball game! Luckily, we were one row from the top, so it was slightly quieter and darker. Daddy even changed Mylie's diaper right there in the stands! Man, we have really relaxed as parents! By the time we got back on the Max to head home, Mylie was truly exhausted. She was sitting quietly on Daddy's lap, and we all watched as her eyes slowly rolled back in her head, her eyelids closed, and she just slumped over into his arms. She did not wake up again, even as we got off the train, walked to the car, buckled her in, drove all the way back to Seattle, took her out, and put her in her crib. We just put her to bed in her jeans and she slept soundly until Mommy had to wake her up the next morning for church!

Tuesday, October 25 Mommy decided to experiment with a little more solids today and gave Mylie her first taste of baby food - bananas. Apparently, she was expecting rice cereal again, because when she got the first taste of what is apparently much more sour than what she was expecting, she made a horrible pucker face! She looked just like her Great Grandpa Bryan used to. Then she started with a dramatic gagging sound, and Mommy thought she was not going to go for it. But when Mommy offered her another spoonful, Mylie ate it up. She continued to eat a whole serving, so she seemed to like it, although every once in awhile she would through in a dramatic gagging sound. We have no idea where she learned to be so melodramatic!

Wednesday, October 26 Today was the Baby Halloween Party for our group. The babies were all so adorable in their costumes, and we couldn't resist another couch shot. Of course, they were all screaming in a matter of seconds, and we were rolling on the ground! Show me the babies!

Thursday, October 27 At the Halloween party yesterday, Mommy found out from one of the other moms that there is a Hanna Andersson Outlet store in the area, so three of us decided we definitely needed to go. Mommy had a gift certificate from one of her baby showers that was burning a hole in her pocket! Mommy would also like to invite anyone looking for gift ideas to consider a Hanna Andersson gift certificate! So we loaded all three moms and all three babies in a Suburban and headed up! We also ended up going to the Oshkosh B'Gosh store, and spent way too much money! But we got way cute clothes to show for it, and saved more than we spent, so that has got to count for something. It was pretty fun to have all of us packed into a suburban together, and of course, Mylie loved the social times with the other babies.

Friday, October 28 We had to skip Gymboree today so that Mommy could finish her paper for class. She wasn't able to get a babysitter either, so Mylie had to come with her to class this evening. Luckily, the teacher didn't mind. Mylie was pretty tired, so she got cranky, and the bottle Mommy brought was still frozen. She ended up having to run upstairs and heat it up in the microwave and then everything was fine.

Saturday, October 29 Tonight was our Halloween Party at church. We invited Aunt Anneka and Nana & Papa to come. It was VERY crowded, however, because way more people showed up than they had expected, so we didn't get very much food. After awhile, we left to come back home and looked at Nana & Papa's pictures from Disneyland.

Monday, October 31 Mylie's first Halloween! We spent it at the Perkins' house where we had dinner and then played one of our favorite games (which is also Halloween appropriate), Elixer. Mylie, who has been refusing to sleep anywhere but her own bed lately, actually decided it was okay to sleep somewhere else. We did have to put her in another, very dark room, but at least we were able to play the game without having to play pass-the-fussy-baby all night.
